“The Karate Kid” is my favorite movie of all-time. When I heard that they were remaking the film, I had my doubts. “The Karate Kid” is such an iconic 80’s film and I wasn’t sure how the remake could appeal to people in 2010. Of course Jackie Chan is playing the Mr. Miyagi character. I don’t see how anybody else could play that part since he’s pretty much the only relevant Asian actor we have (besides John Cho aka Harold, who’s too young and Lloyd from “Entourage,” who’s too gay). So I wondered who would play the Daniel LaRusso character. Would they have the character be an Italian-American from Jersey like in the original film? (pehaps played by Mike “The Situation” or Pauly D?) NO. The film makers decided to cast Will Smith’s son as the Karate Kid. Huh? Jayden Smith?! The kid who slept in the subway station bathroom with the Fresh Prince in “The Pursuit of Happyness?” He looks like a 9 year old Carmelo Anthony. How could he be the Karate Kid?! RANDOM. Naturally, I was skeptical. I couldn’t believe that they were about to ruin the good name of “The Karate Kid.” Well, Hillary Swank already ruined it but let’s pretend that “The Next Karate Kid” never happened.
I swore to myself that I wouldn’t watch the remake because I didn’t want to be disappointed and upset by the fact that Jackie Chan would be teaching Will Smith’s son the crane kick. But then I saw the trailer…and there was movement in my pants. I got excited. It actually looks surprisingly good. Unbelievable. I dont know if it was the Fort Minor song (”Remember the Name” always gets me hyped up) or the fact that lil’ Fresh Prince was hitting on an ugly Chinese girl and got beat up for it by even uglier Chinese boys. The atmosphere and environment of the karate tournament even looks nice. It looks like the final battle scene from a Chinese version of “You Got Served.” I don’t think the All-Valley Karate tournament ever looked that fancy. Now I can’t wait to watch I Am Legend, Jr beat up on some Chinese kids (who’s the main antagonist? Johnny Lawrence-XiaoChinMin?). I’m also glad to see that they’re paying tribute to the original film with scenes like catching the fly with chopsticks and Jackie Chan using unique teaching techniques for defensive blocking (taking the jacket on and off = wax-on, wax-off). Anyways, even though it comes out in June, this might be the next movie I see in the theaters since I don’t watch movies anymore. I’m still the only person in the universe who hasn’t seen “Avatar.” Whatever. Karate Kid > 10 ft. blue cats.
